Prescription for Summer Reading
In April 2012, two of our community partners, Reach Out and Read-Alabama (ROR) and Birmingham Public Library (BPL) collaborated with APT to develop and implement an American Graduate initiative: Prescription for Summer Reading. The initiative was rolled out at the Alabama Pediatrics Conference in May of 2012 and has continued to grow each summer.
Medical providers in over 120 ROR sites were asked to “prescribe” summer reading to all of their patients and encourage them to visit their local libraries to participate in summer reading programs. Children visiting pediatricians at ROR sites in Birmingham were encouraged to take their “Prescription for Reading” to their local library to receive a free American Graduate gift pack containing books, crayons, and information on American Graduate educational resources. To date, over 1,000 packs have been distributed. Plans are in place to expand this initiative to the Black Belt region of Alabama in summer 2015.
